Destination Weddings – Pros vs. Cons

Destination weddings are weddings that take place away from where the couple currently lives (usually over 100 miles away). Destination weddings open up a world of possibilities for couples who want a beautiful, relaxing wedding away from their everyday life. However, destination weddings are not for everyone. Let’s explore the pros vs. cons of destination weddings to help you decide if you prefer an intimate getaway or a romantic staycation!

Pros of Destination Weddings

Beautiful Destinations to Choose from

This might go without saying but, there are so many magical destinations to get married! When deciding on having a destination wedding the possibilities are seemingly endless. You could find a tropical hideaway on the beaches of Hawaii, a lush landscape in the hills of Ireland, or an unforgettable view on a mountainside!

The Intimacy of a Small Wedding

More often than not if you choose to have a destination wedding, you will also be choosing to have a small wedding due to the fact that they are more expensive and not everyone will be able to make it to the destination. This allows for a beautiful, intimate ceremony with you, your fiance, and your closest family and friends!

Less Wedding-Day Stress

Unfortunately, wedding days are often paired with tons of stress. Destination weddings have the ability to relieve some of that stress as there are fewer people, fewer vendors, and less of a chance for something to go wrong. A typical destination wedding only requires the couple to show up, get married, and celebrate their love for one another with no added pressure!

Cons of Destination Weddings

The Cost of a Destination Wedding

The cost of a destination weddings can add up fast! For the couple, it seems cheaper to have a destination wedding as there are fewer guests and therefore fewer costs. However destination weddings also add costs that would not be there for a wedding at home: travel to the destination to scope it out, travel for the actual wedding, hotel costs, and more. Be sure to research all of the additional costs of a destination wedding before you start packing your bags!

Not Every Guest will be able to Attend

Not every guest you want to attend will be able to attend a destination wedding. This can be due to a number of reasons: the cost of attending a destination wedding, not being able to get the date of the wedding free, and issues with traveling, among others. It is important to really think about how much it means to you to have every guest be able to attend your wedding!

Not being able to Explore the Destination Beforehand

Not all couples who choose a destination wedding consider this before making their decision! For some couples, it can be too expensive to travel to their destination and meet vendors before their wedding. When this is the case, planning involves a lot of communication via email, text, video chat and phone calls. That is not something that every couple is comfortable with!

Destination Weddings: To Be or Not to Be

At the end of the day, you and your fiance have to decide if the pros outweigh the cons of destination weddings. Maybe you see some of the cons as a positive? Maybe the thought of planning from miles away sounds way too stressful? Whatever you decide to do, your wedding day will be a wonderful day spent surrounded by people you love. Decide what’s best for you and go for it!
